چکیده
Stress associatedwith interpersonal conflict can adversely impactmental and physical health—especially when it causes activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. Among victims of interpersonal transgressions, certain personality characteristics (viz., neuroticismand agreeableness) have been associated in somestudieswith successful conflict resolution anddecreasedphysiological activity.Howvictims’ perceptions of their transgressors’ personalities affect conflict resolution and physiological reactivity, however, has not been examined. Here, we examined the relationships of (a) victims’ agreeableness and neuroticism, and (b) victims’ perceptions of their transgressors’ agreeableness and neuroticismwith plasma cortisol responses in women and (in a larger sample of men and women) forgiveness over time. Victims who perceived their transgressors as highly agreeable had (a) lower cortisol responses following a simulated speech to the transgressor, and (b) higher self-reported forgiveness, even after controlling for initial levels of forgiveness. Participants’ own agreeableness and neuroticism had negligible associations with cortisol response and forgiveness over time. © 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The authors sought to examine whether rumination about psychologically painful, though nontraumatic, interpersonal transgressions is associated with increased salivary cortisol. They measured salivary cortisol, rumination about a transgression, fear and anger regarding the transgressor, perceived painfulness of the transgression, and positive and negative mood in 115 undergraduates who had expe...

To advance understanding of conflict in families, responses to interpersonal transgressions were obtained from the perspective of the victim (transgression-related interpersonal motivations [TRIMs]) and transgressor (perceived transgression-related interpersonal motivations [PTRIMs]) in a sample of Indian families (N= 101). Mother, father, and a 12to 14-year-old daughter indicated how he or she...

The authors examined how conciliatory gestures exhibited in response to interpersonal transgressions influence forgiveness and feelings of friendship with the transgressor. In Study 1, 163 undergraduates who had recently been harmed were examined longitudinally. Conciliatory gestures exhibited by transgressors predicted higher rates of forgiveness over 21 days, and this relationship was mediate...

This study examined the influence of gender role transgressions on perceptions of men and women’s social status, homosexual orientation, and value dissimilarity. Because past research has shown that men who transgress gender role norms are punished more harshly than women, it was hypothesized that male transgressors would be perceived more negatively than female transgressors in each of these ...
